The 2002 vintage
After a very cold winter with little rainfall, the year began with a lot of rain and lower than average temperatures for the season. Though heavy hailstorms reduced the yield in some areas, the later-ripening varieties which had not been damaged by the inclement weather were saved by stable weather that lasted from mid-September to October, producing wines of medium structure with excellent bouquets.
Vineyard
The Monvigliero vineyard is located in the commune of Verduno, at 280 m. a.s.l. on parcels 39 and 40 of land registry map sheet X (both planted in 1967). The total area planted with vines – all of the Nebbiolo variety - is 0.3 hectares. The vineyard lies towards the top of a hill, facing due south on white soil consisting of chalky clay.

Picking and maceration
The grapes were harvested by hand on October 4th 2002, with careful grading. The maceration in steel lasted 15 days, with punching down of the cap until the fermentation had ended.

Ageing
The wine was aged for 30 months in oak and 3 months in steel, followed by 8 months in bottles lying down prior to its release.
