The 2001 vintage
Rain and higher than average temperatures in winter and spring led to early budding of the vines, which were partly damaged subsequently by late frosts in April. Summer followed with little rainfall, and a particularly hot and close August and early September. Some rain in the middle of the month slowed down the ripening of the grapes, without compromising their quality.
Vineyard
The Massara vineyard lies at 265 m. a.s.l. in the commune of Verduno, on parcel 137p of land registry map sheet X (planted partly in 1988 and the remainder in 1992). The total area is 1.22,49 hectares, all planted with the Nebbiolo variety. The white soil is mainly chalky clay, and the vineyard faces south-east.

Picking and maceratione
Selective picking of the grapes took place on October 10th 2001. The maceration in wooden vats (tino), with the traditional technique of the “submerged cap” at the end of the alcoholic fermentation, lasted 25 days.

Ageing
Ageing took place in large oak casks for 41 months, followed by 4 months in steel and 14 months in the bottle prior to the wine’s release.

Bottling
The wine was bottled without filtration on July 22nd 2005, with lot no. L05-203. The 2001 production included 6,388 Albeisa bottles x 0,75 l., 198 bottles x 0.375 l., 89 x 1.5 l., and 23 x 3 l.
